Logistics, Carriers & Freight Forwarders

Logistics companies, carriers, and freight forwarders operate in a sector where risk arises at every stage of the supply chain — from loading and transport to storage and delivery.

Damage to or loss of cargo, delays, errors in documentation, and increasingly frequent cyber attacks can seriously disrupt operations and client relationships. As a broker, VIPOX helps carriers and freight forwarders identify these exposures and insure them through solutions tailored to road, sea, rail, and multimodal transport.

01

Key Sector Risks

Theft and robbery of cargo (escalating through physical and digital vulnerabilities); damage to, destruction of, or loss of goods during transport; delayed delivery; incorrect dispositions and errors in transport documentation; demurrage and detention (the holding of containers and vehicles); cyber attacks and intrusions into freight booking systems (AI-enabled fraud and carrier impersonation); supply chain disruption; geopolitical risk; sanctions; customs duties; and extreme weather conditions. In the air sector there is also so-called social inflation, in rail transport there is capacity and pricing risk, and attacks in the Red Sea have pushed cargo premiums up.

02

Legal Framework

Carrier liability is a voluntary insurance, but it is often made contractually mandatory. In international transport, under Article 23 of the CMR Convention (2006 Protocol), maximum liability is 8.33 SDR per kilogram of gross weight (calculation: 8.33 x SDR/EUR rate x kilogram). Domestic transport is governed by national commercial law (around EUR 3.98 per kilogram in the region). Concealed damage in road transport must be notified under the CMR within 7 days, and the insurer pays compensation within 30 days of the claim. International sanctions (UN, EU, and national lists) are also important, as they may exclude cover. Project Cargo covers solely physical loss of or damage to goods during transport by any means (including loading, unloading, transhipment, temporary storage, and rerouting). Typically excluded are: general average, preventive and salvage measures, disposal of destroyed goods, and the cost of expedited replacement delivery.

Types of Cargo Insurance

For carriers and freight forwarders, we arrange General Cargo (standard goods), internal transport and distribution between branches, specialist transport (Bulk Cargo, RO-RO, and Fine Art), and Project Cargo for capital projects with ALOP/DSU cover. Where required, we also arrange specialist lines — aviation, marine, rail, and space insurance — as well as risk management, claims management, risk analytics, risk retention, and human capital programmes (health, pensions, and talent).

Our Approach

We treat transport and logistics as a distinct, specialist field: together with the client, we identify, quantify, and manage risk exposure along the entire supply chain — from loading, through transport and storage, to delivery. Our strength lies in our knowledge of the domestic market, independence in selecting insurers, and dedication to every client, together with claims handling and the representation of carriers' and freight forwarders' interests. Through our partnership with AON for BiH, we also provide domestic clients with access to the international insurance market when the nature of the risk requires it.
